SE Design has a career opportunity for a Civil Technologist in our Cold Lake or Sherwood Park, Alberta offices.

Position Description:

We are seeking a motivated individual with 3–5 years of experience providing field inspection and survey services, as well as drafting and design support for civil works on municipal transportation and infrastructure projects.

This position includes out-of-town work at rural locations throughout northeastern Alberta.

Position Duties:

Field Inspection and Survey:

• Provide construction inspection and quality control/quality assurance (QC/QA) testing for infrastructure and transportation projects in accordance with contract plans and specifications.
• Review and interpret design plans and specifications for construction projects.
• Carry out construction survey activities, including preliminary topographic surveys, record plan surveys, utility staking, and road/underground construction staking.
• Field measurements and calculations pertaining to alignments, grades, quantities, etc.
• Monitor the placement of soil and granular materials and perform nuclear gauge compaction testing as required. Ensure the safe operation, storage, transportation, and maintenance of the nuclear densometer.
• Perform general office, data management, reporting, and survey administrative duties.
• Conduct field concrete testing to CCIL/CSA standards including slump, air content and casting of test cylinders.
• Undertake drone flights to capture aerial imagery and construction progress.
• Effectively communicate with clients, colleagues, and management.
• Troubleshoot technical issues in the field to consistently deliver high quality results.

Engineering Design Support:

• Provide engineering design and drafting support using AutoCAD Civil 3D (experience in design/drafting is an asset but not required).
• Complete quantity takeoffs, assist with the development of specifications and preparation of tender documents for municipal transportation and infrastructure projects.
• Research and understand engineering standards and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications:

• Post-secondary graduate of an accredited Civil Engineering Technology/Civil Technology program (or equivalent), with 3–5 years of related experience.
• Ability to work extended hours (overtime) during construction season including weekends.
• Strong interpersonal skills and professional written and verbal English communication skills.
• Ability to work well in a team environment and independently, as much of the field work is performed on your own.
• Multi-tasker and innovative creative thinker to effectively problem solve.
• Ability to successfully complete Portable Nuclear Gauge & TDG Training, WHMIS and CSTS Training and all other required training designations.
• A positive work ethic and the ability to adapt to various projects.
• A strong commitment to continuous personal and professional development.
• Valid Class 5 driver’s license with a minimum of four (4) years of verified Canadian driving experience.
• Results oriented with strong workplace safety practices.
